I am enjoying using this french onion soup mix to replace the old stand by Lipton Onion Soup Mix. I used to love using lipton onion soup mix in a variety of recipes. It always helped to increase the depth of flavor in meatloaf, pot roasts and stews.

I think we have all used those packaged onion soup mixes at one time or another in our lives. Did you know that you can make your own homemade version in a matter of minutes?
So many of us need to lower our sodium or watch out for unnecessary fillers and added sugars. So I was missing the handiness of those store bought mixes and decided to make my own.
Using A Secret Ingredient
Now most of the recipes I came across use beef bouillon granules or cubes, which again have WAY to much sodium and fillers of course. So I decided to use mushroom powder in place of the beef bouillon, because it adds dietary fiber, has protein and lets face it you can’t really tell the difference between the two.
I linked to this Shitake Mushroom Powder down in the recipe card, but you can also use my Umami In A Jar aka Mushroom Powder Seasoning if you like.
The mushroom powder that is pictured in the soup mix photo was made from home dried baby bellas that I dried in my air fryer on the dehydrate setting.
