Stove Top Style Stuffing Mix {Gluten Free, THM S, Low Carb}

November 19, 2018 by Judy 4 Comments

Stove Top Style Dressing Mix {THM S, Gluten Free, Low Carb}
I have been trying to make a dry stuffing mix like this Stove Top Style Stuffing Mix to have on hand for our busy nights and I think I finally nailed it!
Stuffing mix was one of the things that was really hard for us to replace when we switched over to a Trim Healthy Lifestyle. But now I can break out some of my standby meals that our family has loved for many years while staying on plan and eating healthy meals.

This post may contain affiliate links to Amazon or other programs. I do earn a small commission from the sales made through these links; however your price never changes. You can see my Full Disclosure here

Why I Think Stove Top Style Stuffing Mix Is So Great

One of the biggest reasons you want to avoid things like the regular boxed stuffing mixes is that they contain a lot of preservatives and fillers, not to mention white bread.

When you make a batch of  Stove Top Style Stuffing Mix, it will save you time when life is hectic. Yes you have to prep a bit ahead of time, but hey aren’t we all worth it?

Grab a friend and introduce her to the wonderful world of Trim Healthy Mama and enjoy your prep time.

About The Bread I Use To Make This Stove Top Style Stuffing Mix

So let’s talk about why I use either my Basic Low Carb Yeast Bread or my Wonderful Blender Buns & Dinner Rolls. Yeast breads have a  certain flavor and the amounts of yeast and honey that I have used in these recipes fits THM guidelines (adding yeast is not off plan, just be mindful of the amount of honey you use to activate it)

Wonderful Blender Dinner Rolls (THM FP, Low Carb)

Both of these recipes are Fuel Pull options for following the Trim Healthy Mama Plan. That means that they are naturally gluten free (unless you add vital wheat gluten), low in carbohydrates and fat. So we are not over doing the calorie load, fat load or the carb load to your system.

You can substitute any of the S or FP style breads such as the Swiss Bread (THM Cookbook pg 198 ) or the Wonderful White Blender Bread (Trim Healthy Table pg 242)

Using a sprouted or sourdough bread will make this recipe a crossover based on added ingredients when you prepare it on the stove top.

Drying The Bread Cubes

When you are drying breads like these you really want the temperature to be low on your oven and to spread the cubes out evenly. I normally set my oven to about 200 and stir the cubes every 45 minutes or so, it takes about 2-3 hours to dry the cubes.

Where to Find Freeze Dried Herbs & Spices

Personally, I shop at a local Mennonite store that carries a wide variety of ingredients that are on plan. But Amazon has bulk freeze dried herbs that are reasonably priced and hey just check in your local grocery as many of them have the herbs and spices called for in this recipe.

When You Are Ready To Make A Pan Of Stove Top Style Stuffing

I normally portion my mix up into quart size baggies (2 cups of mix in each). Bring 1/2 a cup of water to a boil with 2 Tablespoons of butter … remove from the heat, stir in your stove top style stuffing mix, cover … wait a few minutes and done!!

Make sure you are following me on Facebook, Twitter, Flipboard, Google+ and Instagram to keep up with all the new and exciting things I will be posting in 2018.

How Much Stuffing Mix Does This Recipe Make?

This recipe makes about three 2 cup portions of mix, but I know many of you have larger families so adjust accordingly.

This gluten free stop style stuffing mix is sure to become a family favorite!! It gives you the traditional tastes and textures of store bought stuffing mix.
Ingredients
  • 6 cups Low Carb Yeast Bread (cubed and toasted)**
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, freeze-dried
  • 3 tablespoons homemade vegetable bouillon***
  • ¼ cup dried onion flakes
  • ½ cup dried celery flakes
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground sage
  • ½ teaspoon THM Mineral Salt
Instructions
  1. Dry your bread cubes in a 200 degree oven, this will take a couple of hours. the dryer they are the more shelf stable they become.
  2. Mix up a batch of homemade vegetable bouillon or the Trim healthy bouillon (I normally keep this on hand)
  3. As you are drying your bread cubes mix together the rest of the ingredients when the bread cubes are dry and have cooled slightly sprinkle the seasoning mix on top and toss to coat.
  4. You can store this mix in a gallon zip top freezer bag in your freezer or package it into 2 cup portions in a mason jar or quart size zip top bag.
To prepare:
  1. Warm ½ cup of water with 2 TBS of butter in a medium sauce pan. Remove pan from the heat and add 2 cups of the stuffing mix and stir to combine.
  2. Cover and allow to sit for 5 min. Fluff with a fork.
Notes
*You need to make 2 batches of the bread to get 6 cups of bread cubes

**You can use the Wonderful White Blender Bread from Trim Healthy Table on page 242 in place of the low carb yeast bread if you like.

***You can replace the homemade vegetable bouillon with the Trim Bouillon Mix on page 491 of the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook.
