Crock Pot Greek Yogurt

June 14, 2015 by Judy 4 Comments

When I started my Trim Healthy Mama journey I realized that making homemade Crock Pot Greek Yogurt would really help our budget and would ensure that I was getting a product that didn’t contain crazy unhealthy ingredients.

I did some searching and found this tutorial How To Make Crock Pot Greek Yogurt and have been using it ever since. I find that by making my  Crock Pot Greek Yogurt I am able to save a little bit of money and make the flavors that I enjoy most often.

*POST UPDATE*

The link to the tutorial that I used no longer works… so I’m going to put a link to a Tutorial from Briana Thomas here which is similar

This is her Video Tutorial on How to make Crockpot Greek Yogurt

This is 1 gallon of skim milk and 1 6 ounce container of plain Greek yogurt with live and active cultures. Following the above process.

Cockpot Yogurt

You do have to strain this for it to be considered Greek Yogurt. Straining is an odd process as sometimes it takes a full 24 hours and sometimes it only takes 2. You just never know. Normally it’s about 6-8 hours. The nice thing is that even if it strains too long you have an on plan yogurt cheese that is similar to laughing cow.

To strain this I use a large plastic strainer and cover the inside of it with coffee filters, yes you can use cheese cloth or even a fine mesh strainer or pillow case…paint strainers work great too. I ladle this into the strainer which sits over a bowl to catch the whey.

Whey has a lot of different uses.

It can be used to:

ferment fruits and vegetables

feed your garden

feed your house plants

feed it to your pets.

Crock Pot Greek yogurt is such a staple when following a Trim and Healthy Lifestyle… Even if you do not follow the Trim Healthy Mama Plan, it is a beneficial way to include fermented dairy in your diet.

Some of the Ways that I use Crock Pot Greek Yogurt:

As a base for cake frosting

As a protein source in Shakes and Smoothies

As Frozen Yogurt

To make Blended Yogurt Cups

When baking with alternative flours

When making Bread

I’ve been making yogurt in my crockpot for about 7 years. It is the easiest method out there! No measuring, temperature checking, moving it around… it’s brilliant! I strain mine and make a thick cheese with it – you can always thin it out a little but I find the thicker the better…

Just a note: be careful giving the leftover whey to your dogs – it messes with their digestive tracts and the mess isn’t fun. On the other hand, my chickens go NUTS for it!!!
