I am loving these easy as you please hot cross buns!! They make for a quick and easy energizing breakfast while following a Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle.
It takes about 5 minutes to mix up this dough and then you can store it in the fridge for a day or two or you can cook them up right then and there. Quick and easy is something that many of us long for especially when cooking with alternative ingredients like THM Baking blend or sprouted grain flours.
I truly love that I can make these in the oven or in my Air Fryer without a bunch of tweaks and changes. That they store well in the fridge or you can freeze them just add a couple minutes to your cook time or thaw in the fridge when you know you need that energizing breakfast.
How I Make Hot Cross Buns
This recipe for Hot Cross Buns is a variation of my 5 Ingredient Sprouted Bagels. It is SUPER quick and easy as you please to mix up and have on hand when you are needing an Easy E when following the Trim Healthy Mama plan like I do. If you don’t follow this wonderful life style you may want to check it out!!
This recipe is made with whole foods and low in fat. Sprouted grains are easier to digest as well as offer better nutritional values than processed flours. The Sprouted Spelt flour in this recipe is lower in gluten than it’s processed counterparts. 0% greek yogurt works some magic with the baking powder and salt. No need to worry about an alternative sweetener as the baking soda doesn’t have issues with xylitol like yeast does.
You Can Scale This Recipe Easily
This recipe can be scaled easily to serve one or to serve many. So Please have fun with it and even better it is so EASY your kids can make it!!
I Have Included Air Fryer Instructions
These Hot Cross Buns are great when made in your Air Fryer. I know I love my Nuwave Brio Air Fryer and seem to be using it more and more often. It doesn;t heat my kitchen up like the big oven especially for smaller batch recipes like this one that I need to make for our family size.
Hot Cross Buns Recipe
2/3 cup sprouted spelt flour, see notes
1/3 cup THM Oat Fiber, see notes
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon THM Mineral Salt
2 teaspoons THM Super Sweet Blend
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup 0% greek yogurt
1 Tablespoon egg white
2 tablespoons dried cranberries, optional
For the Glaze
2 teaspoons THM Super Sweet Blend, powdered in a coffee grinder
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
1 Tablespoon unsweetened almond milk
1/2 teaspoon THM Baobab Boost powder
Instructions
1. Measure sprouted flour, oat fiber, baking powder, mineral salt, sweet blend and cinnamon. Whisk to combine or use a flour sifter so that everything is mixed well.
2. Add greek yogurt and mix well. Knead dough in the bowl for 1-2 minutes. Dough will be sticky.
3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat oven to 400 degrees
4. Dust your hands with oat fiber and form 4 buns. Place buns on baking sheet.
5. Brush with egg white and bake for 25 minutes at 400 degrees in the oven or 360 degrees in your Air Fryer.
For the Glaze:
Place all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Drizzle in a cross shape across the top of the buns.
Notes:
** You can use Sprouted Wheat flour in the same amount.
*** Oat Fiber is typically found online, I highly reccomend the Trim Healthy Mama brand as it does not add a weird taste to baked goods such as this.

Hi Judy! How long in the air fryer? 25 minutes seems way to long?

Start at 15 min…
Karen says
Would a yogurt hater be able to detect the any kind of yogurt flavor in these or does it disappear in the recipe?
Thank You
Judy says
I do not taste it at all so I think you will be just fine 🙂
