I’m so excited to share this Sweet and Spicy Sugar Free BBQ Sauce !!
This one passed with thumbs up from my husband and my non THM son, in fact Shane said “Mom, please make this all the time so I don’t have to buy BBQ anymore.” That made my Mama heart sing.
It’s not often that My husband or my children ask me to spend extra time in the kitchen, they know I spend hours there already. But when we pulled the ribs from the freezer this morning, My husband asked me to please make BBQ sauce that fits with our Trim Healthy Lifestyle so you bet I bee-lined into the kitchen to make this.
It’s a little bit sweet and a whole lot of tangy… it works great in the slow cooker as well as on the grill as you can see from the photos…
This Sweet and Spicy Sugar Free BBQ Sauce takes about 10 minutes to put together if that, and it can be stored in the fridge for about 1 week.
The recipe makes 2 cups and since it really doesn’t have a carb source or a fat source you can use it in a satisfying meal or an energizing one based on the Trim Healthy Mama principles.
Just remember that tomatoes do add up so be mindful of that when figuring out your sides and protein sources.
I use the Sugar Free Brown Sugar Recipe from Gwen’s Nest in this sauce as well as in most of my baking. You can find her recipe here.

- 1 8oz can tomato sauce
- 1 8oz can water
- 2 TBS brown sugar replacement (I use the one from Gwen's Nest)
- 2 TBS prepared mustard
- 2 TBS Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ tsp high mineral salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp sriracha sauce
- 1 tsp liquid smoke
- ⅛ tsp garlic powder
- ⅛ tsp dried oregano
- 3 TBS onion, I used dried minced
- ¼ tsp xanthan gum
- Combine everything except the xanthan gum in a small sauce pan and heat while whisking.
- Allow sauce to reduce slightly, add xanthan gum while whisking constantly to avoid lumps .
- Turn off heat and whisk for a few more minutes... sauce will thicken as it cools

I notice you use xanthan gum rather than glucci. Is there a reason to this? My husband can’t stand the texture of glucci – he says its slimmy. Would xanthan gum be better?
Thanks and this sauce looks great!

Hi Brenda :),
I did use xanthan because I have the same issue as your husband … anything with glucci in it takes on a slimey texture and I just can’t get past that texture. I have heard that it differs by brand and that the NOW brand is the worst (which is what I have). I haven’t had the problem with the “slime” when using xanthan so I’ve switched over to that for sauces, syrups and things like that :).

I love making my own BBQ sauce. My grandma had an amazing recipe but I was never able to get it from her before she passed. I will always remember that flavor though! Thank you for linking up at the Simply Sundays link party!

Making BBQ suace is new to me, but this was so easy! I can see myself making it this way all the time and it’s healthier without sugar ๐

This sounds wonderful! Hubby doesn’t like BBQ sauce so I don’t make it much but I’ve been looking for a healthy THM version for myself for when the mood strikes. This recipe looks like it’s right up my alley!

It’s been a wonderful discovery here ๐ My son doesn’t want store bought after tasting this one! I hope you enjoy it.

Hi! I have never used liquid smoke before. Does it contain MSG? And where does one buy this product?
Judy says
I don’t think mine has MSG in it and I found it at the grocery store in the spice isle.

Hi! Thank you for the BBQ sauce recipe. I only have one and others are a nice change! Yay! One question…I didn’t think that Worcestershire sauce was plan approved under THM because of the sugar/hfcs in it. The brand I have is Heinz. Do you use one that has no hfcs or sugar in it? I’m going to try the recipe regardless and leave out the Worcestershire sauce. Thank you for the great recipes. I’ve been on THM a year and am very grateful for you and your recipes!!

Hi Shelia,
I have seen worcestershire sauce in some of the cookbook recipes — I actually use Lee & Perrins but never really looked at the ingredients (I know BAD mama!!) i will go double check for sure … Thanks so much for coming by and letting me know ๐

This BBQ sauce was amazing! I’ve made many sugar free versions, and I have to say this one is the BEST! I love that it isn’t so “tomatoey” since you use tomato sauce and NOT tomato paste – also, that it is tangy with sweet is a real plus. Made it today to go with the BBq Bacon Mini-Meatloaves from “joy filled eats”. I wrote this recipe down on a 3×5 card which means this will be a staple in our house :). Many Thanks!

Thank you SO very much!! I’m glad you all are enjoying this BBQ Sauce ๐ It’s great on ribs and chicken too!!

Thank you for this recipe. I love BBQ sauce and needed a good sf version. (I use a Lea & Perrin organic worcestershire and it’s sugar free and gluten free.) My question is if you think this will freeze or not. I’d love to make a double or triple batch and freeze it so when I decide at the last minute I need it I’d have it.
Thank you again!
Judy says
I think it would be fine if you need to freeze it.
