Chocolate Custard Shake

September 25, 2015 by Judy 9 Comments

I have been playing with this Chocolate Custard Shake recipe for a while.

It is smooth and creamy and oh so filling. It makes enough that if you need to share with someone there is enough for both of you, or enough to make a tray of fudgey healthy Popsicle for later.

For me the ability to drink the whole shake when I’m really hungry is awesome and when it’s a bit too much for my appetite; I just freeze the portion I’m not drinking into fudgesicles that way I have a healthy treat for later.

(Bonus: Only dirtying the blender once, I know you can appreciate that as much as I do! )

Shakes are a great grab and go option in the morning and although this one takes a bit of time because you scramble the eggs before putting them into the blender. It really is an easy way to get that meal in even when you might be a little rushed.

Disclosure Statement

One thing I’ve learned following the Trim Healthy Mama Plan is that skipping meals is NOT an option, it really does mess up your metabolism.

I’ve heard a lot of skepticism about the cooked eggs in these shakes but let me just say give it a try, Please… You may be pleasantly surprised and find a new favorite.

I used regular unsweetened unflavored protein powder in mine but if you really want the chocolate flavor to come through you may want to try this Chocolate Custard Shake with some Chocolate Protein powder, like this one from Jay Robb. It’s sweetened with Xylitol and THM plan approved.

This sounds really good! I wanted to comment on a couple of things mentioned in the post. As for scrambling the eggs: I’ve made this type of smoothie, and it does really work well. If you’ve never tried it before, don’t be worried. It works! Also, I’ve tried using raw eggs instead, as some people do, and both my husband and I had tummy issues from it. Another thing mentioned is that it takes a while to make, and if you are rushed in the morning, this recipe may not appeal to you. Well, I am a last-minute gal in the morning. I always make my breakfast the night before. For this one, you could put everything except the ice together the night before. In the morning, dump in the blender, add ice and whirr. …Can’t wait to try this one!

I must admit the eggs sound strange to me but I am definitely going to try this soon! As I see it, this would fill me up much longer (with the eggs in it)than a non-egg smoothie!

I have had this recipe pinned for some time now, but even the thought of cooked scrambled eggs in a drink makes my upper lip turn. Recently I have been drinking smoothies with okra, another lip turner, so I thought I might as well give cooked eggs a try. What is the worst thing that could happen, right? I throw it away?

Well, this was good, like real good. So good in fact that while I was cleaning out the blender I scrambled and cooked 2 more eggs and put them in the fridge for tomorrows breakfast. Who would have thunk it?

It is a shame I can’t go back and fix that whopper of a run on sentence. But just so all you guys know, I know.

someone over on the THM Beginners page shared this and there is some debate over the nutritional information listed. Where do all those carbs come from? Is that a typo?

Hi Ronda, It was an error that I have fixed. I’m not sure why but some of my older recipes are not calculating correctly within the nutritional analysis. I am currently working on getting these older posts converted over and trying to ensure that the information is corrected.

This is absolutely fantastic. I cannot believe that the scrambled egg trick actually worked. I scrambled mine, immediately plopped it in the blender cup and added the almond milk. By the time I finished adding all the rest of the ingredients, it was cooled. I used all the ingredients and amounts listed in the recipe except for the protein powder. I was all out and knew from past experience to sub 1/4 cup of cottage cheese in its place. I can’t wait to make it again when my protein powder arrives.
