These Crispy Curly Turnip Strings are another great Irish Pub Food!
I think these are going to be a new favorite of mine. They are light and crispy, taste great and add a nice crunch to salads, soups and casseroles.
Turnips are really low in carbohydrates as well as fat, so if they are sprayed lightly with coconut oil and roasted in the oven, then basically they are low fat and low carb which makes them awesome for my way of eating.

If you follow Trim Healthy Mama like I do then you know that low-fat and low carb dishes are fuel pulls which makes this mama pretty happy!! Finding easy snack options that are healthy and fun at the same time can be a bit tricky. But these Crispy Turnip Strings are great!
You can have something similar to potato strings without worrying about the carb counts, Using an Air Fryer really helps to cut down on the added fat making them a wonderful addition to any meal for a bit of a light and crisp crunch.
Topping your casseroles or dishes like this Irish Colcannon makes for a nice contrast of textures. Mix it up with a few onion strings and whoop whoop you have the perfect replacement for french fried onions.
I used my spiral slicer to get the turnips into strings this is the one I have, if you don’t have a table top sprializer, you can use your hand-held troodle/zoodle maker, the strings will just be shorter.
Here’s a photo of the one I have..
You could also use the Troodle Maker from Trim Healthy Mama.
Air Fryer Turnip Strings
I love making these in my Nuwave Brio Air Fryer. It saves about 15 min of cook time and allows me to make smaller batches as needed for my snacks etc.
I did use the smallest blade on my spiralizer so that they would cook faster, and I added a bit of baking powder before spraying them with coconut oil and tossing.
Oven or Air Fryer Crispy Turnip Strings Recipe
- 1-2 whole turnips, peeled
- Coconut oil spray
- 2 tsp baking powder (not baking soda)
- Salt or other seasoning, these may change the fuel type for THM's

- Peel and wash turnips.
- if using a hand held spiral slicer, cut turnips in ½
- process the turnips through the slicer. Place turnip strings on a parchment lined baking sheet, if using baking powder sprinkle strings and toss lightlys Then spray lightly with coconut oil.
- Bake turnip string for 25 minutes, stirring once during cooking time. until lightly browned.
- Spiralize your turnips with the smallest blade.

- Spray lightly with coconut oil and toss lightly.
- Place in your Air Fryer basket and bake at 360 for 15 min Shake basket at 7min or toss with tongs taking care not to break the strings up too much.

I was wondering the purpose of the baking powder. Does it give a “crust” to them? Thanks
Judy says
yes it helps add a crust to them, they tend to be a bit soggy without it.
